X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is a non-destructive method that provides a detailed analysis of the gold’s composition. By directing X-rays at the gold item, the XRF device measures the secondary X-rays emitted by the metals in the alloy. Electronic gold testers are portable devices that use electrical conductivity to determine gold purity. These testers have probes that measure the electrical resistance of the gold item, which correlates with its karatage. However, the accuracy can vary depending on the device’s calibration and the item’s surface condition.

7. Fire Assay

The fire assay is the most traditional and accurate method for determining gold purity, especially in mining and refining. It involves melting the gold item in a furnace and separating the pure gold from other metals through a process called cupellation. This method provides an extremely accurate measure of gold content but is destructive and time-consuming. Due to its precision, fire assay is often used in official laboratories for certifying gold purity.

Comparing the Methods

Each method of testing gold purity has its advantages and limitations. Visual inspection and magnet tests are quick and easy but not very reliable. Density tests offer more accuracy but can be impractical for certain items. Acid tests provide a good balance of accuracy and cost-effectiveness but require careful handling of acids. XRF spectrometry and electronic testers offer non-destructive and precise measurements but come with high equipment costs.
